Composition: Amoxicillin 500 mg
Description:
Amoxicillin is semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum penicillin which is stable in presence of gastric acid and may be given without regard to meals and has a similar bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide.
Amoxicillin is used for the same purposes as ampicillin and is especially suitable for the treatment of infections of the urinary and respiratory tracts by ampicillin-sensitive organisms.
Indications:
- Respiratory tract infection
- Genito-urinary tract infection
- Skin and soft tissue infection
- Otitis media
- Acute and Chronic bronchitis
- Gonorrhoea
- Peritonitis
- Typhoid and paratyphoid fever
- Septicaemia
- Bacterial endocarditis
- Gynecological infections including puerperal sepsis and septic abortion
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance, other penicillins.
- Cross-sensitivity with other beta-lactam antibiotics e.g. ampicillin or cephalosporin.
- Pregnancy
Dosage and directions for use:
Adult: 250 mg thrice daily, increasing to 500 mg thrice daily for more severe infections.
Children: 20 mg/kg body wt. in 3 divided doses.
Special Precautions:
- Periodic assessment of renal, hepatic and hematopoietic functions should be made during prolonged therapy.
- Anaphylactoid (fatal hypersensitivity reactions) have been reported in patients on penicillin therapy.
- Erythematous rashes with glandular fever in patients receiving amoxicillin
- Prolonged use may also cause an overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
